Meizhou Island

MeiZhouDao is a small island off of the coast of Putian, not far from Fuzhou. It is known to some of the locals as a Holy Land for Mazu, and has on the island a large temple dedicated to Mazu and for her worship. Mazu, also spelt Matsu, is the goddess of the sea, and is said to protect sailors and fisherman. MeiZhou was her birthplace in 960, and as such MeiZhouDao has become one of the foremost places to worship her. However, she is also worshipped in Hainan, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Taiwan and Fujian, as well as some other countries such as Finland. (more…)

Quanzhou

by Amanda Sinclair

Quanzhou has an ancient history, dating back to the 13th century when it was a trading port and a stop on the maritime silk route. Now, still a vibrant city, it is smaller than Fuzhou and Xiamen, but is full of variety and culture. In Quanzhou there is much evidence of its Muslim population, which can be seen by local dress and buildings. It adds a true beauty to the town, which is not found in many other places.

Chongwu is about 50 km east of Quanzhou and home to the ancient ‘stone city’, which has one of the best-preserved city walls in China. The town was initially used to help defend against marauding Japanese pirates, hence the large stone walls. (more…)

Bai Shui Yang

In Fujian, Bai Shui Yang (白水洋, meaning white water ocean) is absolutely a tourist must for people coming from all over the world.  Situated in Pingnan County of Ningde City in northern Fujian, it used to take 3-4 hours to get there. But as the infrastructure improves, it takes about 2.5 hours drive to arrive at this wonderful tourist resort. The closest high speed train station is Gutian, which is 100 kg away from the resort. Bai Shui Yang  is a scenic highlight in northern Fujian which is often overlooked by foreign tourists.

As part of Yuan Yang Xi (鸳鸯溪) tourist area, Bai Shui Yang is one of the four great wonders constructing the broader resort areas. Bai Shui Yang is a truly fantastic natural landscape.  Modern geologists can not accurately explain how it’s formed geologically.  Hence, Bai Shui Yang is regarded as the work of God.  (more…)

Pingtan is another little fishing island on the coast. I say a little island, it is the fifth largest Island in China, and is reached through Fuqing by a bridge. It is a quaint little place, with some beautiful beaches, and due to the location in the Taiwanese Strait, has a lot of Taiwanese businesses and food there to be sampled and enjoyed.

Journey:
To get to Pingtan Island from Fuzhou, you can just take a bus directly there, which makes it a lot easier, as you dont need to make any transfers. The bus takes a couple of hours, but is air conditioned, and only coat 45RMB when I left last year in July. The bus takes you directly to the bus station in Pingtan, which is located within the town, from there you can go anywhere. (more…)

Gui An Hot Springs

By Laurent Lebouille

Fuzhou is blessed with plenty of Hot Springs, in the city as well as its surroundings. A trip to the Hot Springs can take anything from a few hours up to a whole weekend, depending on what you want to spend – and how much you like Hot Springs. Usually people plan trips from Fuzhou that take about half a day or so.

There are many places that offer ‘Hot Springs’ and although most are genuine, the amount you pay and what you get for it varies considerably. Overpaying for a ‘Hot Spring’ that is not clean or even of questionable morality can be a far from relaxing experience. This article is about the Gui’An Hot Springs, which are not the most luxurious of all options, but are widely acclaimed by locals and expats as the best value for money in the area. The Hot Springs near Fuzhou are natural sources of hot water that is heated below the earth in the volcanically active soil. The heat pushes the water up through cracks and caves into surface wells, that are used to fill numerous baths of all shapes, sizes and temperatures. The water holds a special, constant mix of minerals that in combination with the right temperature is said to be beneficial to the human body. In addition, most Hot Springs are scented or infused with other herbs, drinks, (more…)

Fuzhou's Beach @Changle

Is there a beach in Fuzhou?

People will tell you about the beautiful beaches in Pingtan, or how nice the ocean is in Xiamen. But what about Fuzhou? On the map it appears to be close to the ocean.  Is there a beach in Fuzhou? The short answer is no; however, there is one in Fuzhou’s neighbor city, Changle. If you have ever flown into or out of Fuzhou’s airport, then you have been to Changle, because Fuzhou’s airport is actually in Changle, not Fuzhou. (more…)
